Antimicrobial Trunking Systems

Where hygiene is a priority, we can now offer a range of cable management systems with antimicrobial properties.

By treating PVC-U with a silver-based material the Bio range of perimeter trunking delivers ongoing antimicrobial properties that prevent 99.9% of harmful bacteria growth.

And, because the Marshall-Tufflex Bio trunking solution is integral to the PVC-U material, there is no reduction in effectiveness of the trunking throughout its life - even if scratched or damaged.

Microbial organisms can also cause product deterioration, discoloration and bad odours and antimicrobial treatments help to prevent these effects and provide an extra level of protection when combined with normal cleaning procedures.

Two tests, one for MSRA and one for Klebsiella Pneumoniae, were carried out in accordance with ISO 22196:2007 which is a quantitative test – i.e a Bio sample and a non-Bio sample were exposed to a known quantity of bacteria under laboratory conditions. After 24 hours, the quantity of bacteria still present was measured. In both cases the survival rate of the bacteria on the Bio sample was less than 0.1% or, to put it the opposite way, it showed a greater than 99.9% kill rate.

Well-known bacterial organisms against which Marshall-Tufflex Bio Trunking is effective are:

· Staphylococcus aureus

· Methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

· Streptococcus pyogenes

· Klebsiella pneumoniae

· Escherichia coli (E.Coli)

· Pseudomonas aeruginosa

· Salmonella enteritidis

· Bacillus subtilus

· Legionella sp

· Lactobacillus sp

· Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis (VRE)

· Salmonella choleraesuis

· Acinetobacter baumanii

· Corynebacterium pseudodiphtheriticum

Further tests can be carried out on behalf of a customer for any bacteria not listed above, this can be done but it takes time.

Operation Bio at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth

Eleven operating theatres at a leading South West hospital have been fitted out with a new and unique cable containment system developed to lead the way in the fight against harmful and potentially deadly bugs, providing hospitals managers with an additional weapon in their battle against infection.

Odyssey Bio proved perfect for operating theatres at the Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, an acute general hospital that is part of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. It was installed as part of a strict, on-going process to control the spread of infections and specified by Plymouth Hospital NHS Trusts Electrical Estates department. Dodd Group, the resident electrical contractor on site, installed the sleek trunking, favoured for its aesthetically pleasing and easy-to-clean curved profile.
