What is Embodied Carbon, TM65, and how does it help?

In the building industry, embodied carbon refers to the greenhouse gas emissions arising from the manufacturing, transportation, installation, maintenance, and disposal of building materials.

TM65 is a carbon calculation methodology developed by the Chartered Institution of Building Services (CIBSE). The calculation is internationally recognised and provides manufacturers a simple method to calculate the embodied carbon for their products.
By entering data for each product (weight, material, location of manufacture etc) the tool calculates the embodied carbon of a product for its manufacture, installation, maintenance and disposal. It then adds up all these calculations to provide a total embodied carbon content value in kg eCO2e (Kilograms Embodied Carbon Dioxide Equivalent).

"Manufacturers such as Marshall-Tufflex provide easy-to-read embodied-carbon figures for their products calculated using the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) document, TM65 – Embodied carbon in building services. The CIBSE guide provides a simplified route to evaluating the carbon impact of M&E products using basic material, transport and process data."

Who uses this information and why?

The UK’s Net Zero strategy is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050. To enable a reduction, clients first need to measure the carbon in a product or building. If all the products within a building project have an embodied carbon value then in principle it’s possible to calculate the embodied carbon value for the building as a whole at the design stage. With this information, clients are then able to make decisions regarding the construction of a building that may reduce the overall carbon impact or determine what level of offsetting is required to achieve Net Zero.
